Toxins in Cosmetics and Household Cleaners

By: Dr. Peggy Malone

On this week’s episode of my television show ‘Living Well’, I chatted with Owner and Operater of Jaydancin, Vickee Balazs and Enjo consultant Vanessa Bell.

We covered the very important topic of toxins in our environment and how they are making us sick.  Many of us think about pollution in the air but we don’t often think of the cosmetics and grooming products that we put on and in our bodies every day as being toxic.  We also don’t tend to think about the chemicals we are cleaning our house regularly as contributing to us being sick.

These two ladies shared some great information on how to reduce our toxic load by choosing different personal grooming and household cleaning products.

We chatted first with Vickee Balazs who is the owner and operator of Jaydancin.

What is Jaydancin?

Jaydancin is a company based out of Sparta that has created a line of organic & natural skin care products. We are educators and help people to make better choices for optimal health. We work with people who have many skin conditions such as roseacea, eczema, psoriasis and many other health issues.

The name comes from the inspiration of my children, Jason is my son, Cindy is my daughter and Jaydan is my grandson.  Our new store in Lambeth is Jaydancin & Zoe’s  Marketplace…Zoe is a greek word meaning `life` hence `life`s market place` and Zoe is also my granddaughter`s name.  How can we not be successful?

We hear so much about toxins and chemicals in our products, why do you think it so important to use natural/organic products?

I like to use the bathtub analogy.  It isn`t a problem with one drip or two, but pretty soon if the drips continue even at a slow pace, eventually the tub is going to overfill.  Similarly, if we keep using and ingesting products with chemicals and toxins, we are going to overload as well.  It comes out in different forms in everyone. Skin issues, diet issues, stress, headaches, pains, cancer, etc. it is literally endless with what`s going on right now with people`s health.

With all the marketing & fancy packaging, how can we really know for sure what really is natural/organic?

Start with reading the labels.  It`s very simple, if you can`t pronounce it, then it probably isn`t from the earth.  It gets very overwhelming knowing where to start, but start with one thing, educate yourself and learn as much as you can what`s right what works for you and your family.  There are so many marketing gimmicks out there it is mind boggling…for example many products will say `key ingredients`…but what are ALL of the ingredients

I am always curious why there needs to be a list of 15-20 ingredients

Why is Jaydancin different?  What is unique about your company and philosophy?

Most companies will start with a base that is commercially manufactured for pennies and the company will purchase a base such as a soap base, shampoo base, cosmetic base, etc and then focus on the organic ingredients such as the wonderful properties as lavender.  What they are NOT sharing is the parabens, formaldehyde, DMN and other toxic ingredients they are in the base or to preserve shelf life.

Our philosophy is fresh life, not shelf life.

We make our products from scratch.

Every ingredient we use comes from the earth.

Every ingredient we use you can eat.

Every ingredient chosen for every product has a purpose.

We don`t fluff it up or pretty it up…it is as it is..pure and simple.

Our products have very few ingredients…sometimes only 3 ingredients!!

It’s interesting to know why you give out your recipes and teach what you do.  Aren’t you afraid of people copying you and taking business away from you?

We get asked this a lot at every class I teach. I believe in the law of abundance and there is plenty for everyone. Our philosophy for teaching what we do is simply to educate people so they understand what we do, how we do it and most importantly WHY we do what we do.  Why we use oils such as sunflower, olive, coconut, shea butter as our base and not vegetable oils or canola oil, etc. has a huge impact on the effectiveness on the end result.

There is growth in understanding and knowledge and in the truth.

And that`s what we focus on.

Yes, many people have tried to copy what we do.  There are many people making products from their kitchen and selling them.  We are professionals in what we do.  We have 2 commercial kitchens, professional staff and a new 1700 square foot store in Lambeth where we can spend time with our clients and let them try our products.  We do not spend money on fancy packaging but rather in the quality of the ingredients. Our products have been effective for people all over the world. Our business has grown from word of mouth.  We do not compromise on how we make our products and will stand behind everything that we do.

Is there a place where people can go to find out more information?

Safe cosmetics.org

Lovethelabel.ca

David Suzuki Foundation

What is your vision and long term goals in your company?

I would love to see the time when people choose organic and or natural products as their first choice…not as an alternative choice. We work with many people who have cancer and you can ask any one of them if they had it to do over again would they think twice about choosing products without chemicals and being exposed to toxins.  Some people say it`s expensive, that`s why our mandate is to keep our products as affordable as possible and still be able to stay in business.

It`s your health and you don`t always get a second chance if you compromise on this.

Our long term goal is to be educators and set the example. It isn’t always easy because we are not mainstream…people are scared, they don’t know who to believe or who to trust anymore.  We`ve taken on the perspective to help them to better understand so they can make good choices.

We have a fantastic team at Jaydancin and it is truly everyone’s passion there to teach, educate and be the example.

Next we chatted with Enjo Consultant, Vanessa Bell about an interesting alternative to household cleaning.

What is ENJO and how is it different from how I clean my house right now?

ENJO is a direct sales company that sells a fibre based cleaning system. Independent Consultants sell ENJO products and a unique business opportunity.

•The average home owner spends 10-12 hours cleaning their home with traditional methods and cleaners

•Cleaning with ENJO reduces your cleaning time by 50% saving you time and money for your family

•ENJO uses patented fibre technology and water, reducing your exposure to harmful chemicals, reducing your risk

•ENJO fibres replace 90% of the chemicals used in home cleaning saving the average household $400 or more per year

•ENJO is safe and clean for your children!

Tell me a bit about the company and how you got involved.

•ENJO Began in 1990 and is still manufactured in Austria

•It is a Family produced quality product

How I got involved:

•My husband Phil had headaches that were especially bad right after I cleaned using products filled with chemicals.  He was dealing with headaches but also was concerned for me and my health because I was being exposed to the chemicals first hand when I cleaned.

•I had to step back and ask myself if I want to Kill bacteria or Clean?

•I did some research and found that:

– 75% of all accidental poisonings occur in the home

– Asthma and allergy cases in young and old are on the rise

– After you clean, you touch the surfaces (counters, doors, floors) this is exposing your family to harmful chemicals. Not to mention the chemicals that we breathe in.

– Parents who stay at home are at risk 54% more susceptible to Cancer (from Product cleaning)

Enjo is a product I can stand behind – ENJO fibre effectively removes bacteria from surfaces without using product or anti-bacterial agents…just water

There are many toxins and chemicals in traditional cleaners. Tell me about the health benefits of using ENJO products instead.

•The great thing about ENJO is that there are no chemicals used, we use just water.

•ENJO will clean reduce bacteria in your home 6X better than traditional cleaning products.

•What are two things bacteria needs to grow? (moisture and food)

•If you smell something, (vim and vinegar same category), it means there is residue left

•Spray product – it takes 26 seconds for that product to be found in every organ of your body.

•Residue provides the food for bacteria to feed on so if you clean and then you don’t dry what’s left behind it is the perfect environment for bacteria to live and multiply

•Women who work at home have a 54% higher death rate from cancer due to exposure to toxic chemicals in household cleaning

How the Fibres Work

•Surfaces of the fibres are not flat, they have pores where dirt and bacteria lay

•With traditional product, you spray it on or wipe it on and eats in to surface and eats at the dirt and bacteria

•ENJO works by using water as the solvent and the fingers of fibre

•The fibre works by getting to the bottom layers of those pores and holes and picks up all the dirt and bacteria and traps it in the fibre.

•Traditional Products – residue left vs ENJO just water and clean

•ENJO System is 2-step system: clean and then dry

•When you clean with ENJO fibres you are picking up all the dirt and bacteria and trapping it in the fibres

•When you finish cleaning with Enjo there is no dirt, no bacteria but also no residue left behind. (no product)

•By drying you take away the two things bacteria needs to grow (food and water)

•When you clean and then dry, your surface is 99.99% bacteria free

•The truth is that bacteria can’t grow in a clean and dry environment…it is that simple.

Are the ENJO fibres guaranteed?

•30 day $ back guarantee Take home, try it, if ENJO is not for you we will give you 100% of money back Manufactures warrantee is 2 years on normal use

Is ENJO hard to take care of?

-Before first use, wash all fibres (except the Lint Glove). —–ENJO fibres don’t like: fabric softener, bleach; dryers, being wrung lengthways or dry cleaning.

-For light soilage, rinse/wash fibres by hand.

-For medium/heavy soilage, machine wash fibres in water up to 60°C using liquid or powdered laundry detergent.

-After washing, hang fibres to dry.

Were you skeptical of ENJO at first?

•The bathroom kit was the first one I purchased because I figured that is the area that needs the toughest cleaners.

•It was hard to believe but easy to see that Enjo worked great in my bathroom!

•The product is also environmentally friendly as I’m not flushing and rinsing a tonne of chemicals down the drain now.

Why do you recommend ENJO?

•ENJO is right for everyone

i.Ergonomic product

ii.No scrubbing

iii. Easy to use if you are 4 to 94

Why isn’t ENJO sold in stores?

•Seeing is believing

•If we shipped to store, we would have to mass produce the ENJO product.

•The company employs many people in Austria (Women sew and Men make fibres)

•The Product is Family Produced and the company value is family first.

•If had to be mass produced this would be lost

If someone is looking to try these products, how do they do it? How can they contact you?

Ways to Get ENJO

•Purchase product directly from myself

•Host a demo, share ENJO with others and get ENJO products at 1⁄2 price

•Start your own ENJO Business (I would love to sit down with you over coffee and talk to you about how ENJO has changed my life)

Our toxic load is getting larger all the time and it’s important for us to take more responsibility in finding ways to reduce it.  This can start by being more aware of the products that we use on and in our bodies and the products we use as household cleaners.
