In Episode 129 of The Improvement Project podcast I share some research and thoughts on how to optimize your environment to improve your habits.
We don’t really consider that our surroundings can have a significant impact on what we do or don’t do each day. Don’t you think it would be amazing to change something in your environment and that simple change would make it way more likely that you’d follow through with a good habit without even thinking about it that much? I do!! Sign me up.
By changing your surroundings, you can place a hurdle in the way of bad behaviours and remove the barriers to good ones. James Clear refers to this strategy as environment design.
Here’s an easy way to apply environment design to your own life: think about your environment in relation to the number of steps it takes to perform a habit. To make good habits easier, reduce the number of steps to do them. To make bad habits harder, increase the number of steps between you and the habit.
